The cornea, like several other parts of the eye, plays a role in the refraction of light and therefore helps to ensure that a clear image is formed on the retina. Good vision can only be achieved with an intact and healthy cornea.The cornea also forms the front transparent surface of the eye and may undergo various changes. A distinction must be made between normal corneal astigmatism, which is present in many people, and a pathological weakness of the corneal connective tissue (Ceratoconus).

What Is Measured?

Using the Pentacam® and a Scheimpflug imaging system, a large number of images are analyzed by computer and combined to create a topographic analysis of the cornea. The three-dimensional curvature of the cornea is then reconstructed with extremely high accuracy and spatial resolution. This makes it possible to determine whether the cornea is healthy or shows pathological changes.

• For evaluation and, if necessary, treatment planning in cases of irregular corneal curvature
• As part of the evaluation of unexplained vision deterioration
• To optimize the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations, particularly for premium lenses (e.g. before cataract surgery)
• As a basis for fitting contact lenses

This Examination Is Not Covered by Statutory Health Insurance. What Alternative Is Covered?

There is no other comparable examination technique. Various forms of corneal photography can provide a visual impression of the condition of the cornea, but due to their limited accuracy, they are not suitable for diagnosing corneal diseases or for performing calculations prior to eye surgery.
